Cyril Ramaphosa, South Africa’s president, has revealed that his country’s priorities during its G20 presidency will be to harness critical minerals to foster inclusive growth and highlight the dangers of climate change to developing countries. Speaking at the World Economic Forum, he called for the G20 to develop a green industrialization and investment framework. He also advocated for member countries to work together in confronting the challenges of the 21st century, including pandemics, migration, poverty, and terrorism. South Africa is the first African country to hold the G20 presidency, taking over from Brazil in December 2024. The term will run for one year, until the end of 2025, when Pretoria will hand over the group’s leadership to the United States. During this period, South Africa will work with its predecessor and successor to achieve its agenda.
