Tamujuntu, a dance by South Africa’s Via Katlehong dance company, is electrifying audiences. Stomping, whistling, and leaping across a sand-strewn stage at Lyon’s Maison de la Danse, dancers celebrate life with energy, playfulness, and skill. At the heart of Tamujuntu is a dynamic fusion of two iconic street dances: South Africa’s Pantsula and Brazil’s Passinho. Both art forms are deeply rooted in the social struggles and vibrant lifestyles of their communities, making Tamujuntu not just a dance, but a shared story of resilience. The piece, choreographed by Brazil’s Paulo Azevedo, transforms these distinct styles into a joyful and moving new expression. The very title “Tamujuntu” reflects this unity, blending a Brazilian concept of togetherness with the South African philosophy of Ubuntu, reminding us that our humanity is interconnected.
