Sudan has accused the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of violating the Genocide Convention by supporting paramilitary forces in Darfur, fueling the genocide against the non-Arab Masalit tribe in 2023. In a filing to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Sudan requested emergency orders to prevent further atrocities by the UAE-backed Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Khartoum accused Abu Dhabi of arming the RSF, making it complicit in their atrocities. The UAE denies the allegations, calling Sudan’s case a political stunt. However, a report by a team of UN experts lends credence to the accusations. As the ICJ case could take years, Sudan is pushing for immediate action to halt the violence. However, the UAE’s reservations about the court’s jurisdiction may prevent the case from advancing.
