Sudan’s army loses last Darfur stronghold

9

Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have captured El-Fasher, the army’s final stronghold in Darfur, marking a major turning point in the country’s ongoing civil war. The takeover followed days of intense fighting that left dozens of civilians dead and more than 250,000 residents—half of them children—trapped under RSF control. The UN has since accused RSF fighters of committing atrocities, including summary executions and ethnically motivated killings. Disturbing social media footage appears to show fighters beating and detaining people while using racist slurs. Military leader General Abdel-Fattah Burhan confirmed the army’s retreat, saying it aimed to prevent further destruction. The fall of this strategically vital city not only marks a significant loss for the Sudanese army but also raises grave concerns about the future stability of the country and the safety of its people.
