Sudan’s RSF Chief Sworn in as Leader of Parallel Government

3

Sudan’s conflict has deepened as Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has been sworn in as the head of a parallel government in Nyala, South Darfur. Backed by the Sudanese Founding Alliance, Dagalo will lead a 13-member presidential council with rebel leader Abdelaziz Adam al-Hilu as his deputy. The move follows a February charter signed in Kenya by the RSF and allied groups, which Khartoum has denounced as illegitimate. The UN Security Council also rejected the parallel authority, calling it a breach of Sudan’s sovereignty. This political fracture deepens the catastrophic civil war that began in April 2023, a conflict that has already killed tens of thousands and created one of the world’s worst displacement crises.
