Archaeologists have uncovered a sunken ancient Egyptian port that could offer new insights into Cleopatra’s life as well as maritime activity in the region. The underwater site, located off the Mediterranean coast near Taposiris Magna, features towering columns, polished stone floors, amphorae, ship anchors, and cemented blocks—all dating back to Cleopatra’s era. National Geographic explorers Kathleen Martínez and Bob Ballard spearheaded the discovery, tracing a 1,305-meter tunnel linking the temple to the sea. Martínez believes the port may relate to Cleopatra’s burial, though some experts remain skeptical. Excavations have also revealed coins, pottery, and statues, which suggest a connection between the temple and the goddess Isis. While the tomb of Cleopatra remains undiscovered, this find deepens understanding of Egypt’s ancient naval infrastructure and offers tantalizing clues for future exploration.
