Tanzania orders closure of schools and government offices

1

Tanzania’s government instructed civil servants and students to remain at home on Thursday following a contentious general election that sparked violent protests. The unrest, which led to a police-imposed curfew in Dar es Salaam, was fueled by the disqualification of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s main challengers from the presidential race. Protesters clashed with police, set a government office ablaze, and caused widespread internet disruptions. While the streets were quieter under a heavy security presence the next day, some demonstrators used communication apps to plan further action. The main opposition, CHADEMA, had decried the election as a “coronation.” Critics have condemned the deepening repression of opposition figures under Hassan, which contrasts with her earlier promises of political reform.
