The Power of Storytelling: Shaping Africa’s Future Narrative

4

Moky Makura, the executive director of Africa No Filter, believes that shifting the narrative around Africa could unlock its immense potential. Drawing from the influence of films like Top Gun and Black Panther, Makura argues that intentional storytelling can reshape perceptions of the continent, transforming them from negative to positive. She cites research from the University of Bath’s Professor Adam Hahn, which highlights the negative stereotypes surrounding Africa, such as political instability and disease. While these stereotypes might seem benign, they are far from it. In fact, they impact global interest in African products and culture. Makura suggests that framing Africa’s story around its progress, particularly in the creative, digital, and green economies, can alter perceptions. She advocates focusing on Africa’s opportunities rather than challenges, which she believes will help the continent attract global investment and create a more optimistic future.
