Togo Cracks Down on French Media Amid Rising Political Unrest

10

Lomé has suspended French broadcasters RFI and France 24 for three months, accusing them of spreading biased and inaccurate content that allegedly undermines national stability. The move aligns Togo with other West African states that have also blocked French media, reflecting mounting tensions between governments and independent journalism in the region. The surprise ban follows anti-government protests sparked by rising electricity costs, constitutional changes, and the controversial arrest of activist rapper Aamron, who called for the protest. After Aamron reappeared and issued an apology for his role in the protests, calls for President Faure Gnassingbé’s resignation intensified, with opposition parties demanding civil disobedience starting June 23.
