The United States is considering reducing its diplomatic presence abroad by shutting down 10 embassies and 17 consulates. Africa is set to bear the brunt of this plan as most of the planned closures are in countries on the continent. For instance, six of the 10 embassies scheduled for closure are on the continent, including those in the Central African Republic, Eritrea, and Gambia. The closures aim to align with Trump’s push for reducing federal spending. However, they have raised concerns about weakening US influence, particularly in regions where China is gaining ground. Critics argue that this move could harm US national security by reducing diplomatic engagement and intelligence-gathering capabilities. The proposal still requires congressional approval, and changes could be made.
