Trump’s Aid Cuts Threaten Health Collapse in 10 African Nations

7

According to new data, many African health programs are deeply reliant on US aid. Consequently, the Trump administration’s dismantling of USAID potentially spells disaster for many of the continent’s health systems. In over 20 African countries, US assistance forms the backbone of public health, funding everything from maternal care to malaria treatment. Experts warn the cuts could undo decades of progress, especially in fragile states, and trigger regional health crises. The situation is grim in nations like Somalia, South Sudan, and Malawi, where US assistance is more than double the government’s health spending, making them especially vulnerable to aid cuts. Other African countries whose health systems could be weakened by the cuts include Uganda, Liberia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Zambia, and Burundi.
