U.S. President Donald Trump’s Africa envoy, Massad Boulos, has initiated groundwork for a critical minerals agreement with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). During his visit, Boulos met with leaders from DRC, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda, aiming to secure U.S. access to essential minerals like cobalt and coltan. The proposed deal hinges on U.S. assistance in stabilizing eastern DRC, where M23 rebels, allegedly supported by Rwanda, have disrupted mining operations. Following Boulos’s visit, the DRC repatriated three U.S. citizens involved in a failed coup attempt, and U.S.-owned Alphamin Resources announced plans to reopen its tin mine after rebel forces withdrew. Companies such as Rio Tinto and KoBold Metals are expected to participate in the U.S.-backed mineral partnership.
