Uganda shuts Congo border over Ebola surge

Uganda Shuts DR Congo Border

Uganda has sealed its border with the Democratic Republic of Congo for four weeks following a surge in Ebola cases, with exceptions for humanitarian operations, security personnel, and essential cargo. The country has recorded seven confirmed cases and one death from the rare Bundibugyo strain of the virus, whose epicenter remains in Congo’s Ituri province, where more than 900 suspected cases and over 220 deaths have been recorded. Any individual permitted to cross into Uganda must complete a mandatory 21-day self-isolation period. The decision helps Uganda ensure greater public health protection and demonstrates decisive containment leadership. However, cross-border traders and communities dependent on the Congo-Uganda corridor lose economically, as do humanitarian supply chains that rely on fluid movement. Ultimately, the closure tests whether East Africa’s emergency health infrastructure can contain a geographically expanding epidemic before it reaches Uganda’s densely populated interior.
