UK Apologizes to Malema After Visa Snafu Ahead of Cambridge Speech

8

The British High Commission in South Africa has apologized to Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema after visa delays barred him from attending a Cambridge University conference. Despite early application and priority service, Malema was notified just before boarding his flight that his visa had been denied—an act he called “politically motivated.” British High Commissioner Antony Phillipson expressed regret for the incident, blaming UK bank holidays and procedural timing, and claimed he couldn’t intervene in Home Office decisions. Malema, famous for his outspoken views, was set to address the “Africa Together Conference,” and his absence has reignited criticism of the UK’s visa process. The Home Office has promised full refunds for the affected delegation’s application fees.
