The UN Security Council has voted to expand the mandate of the Kenya-led multinational security force in Haiti. The mission is now officially designated a “Gang Suppression Force,” granting it expanded powers to proactively detain individuals suspected of gang activity. The resolution passed with 12 votes in favor, while Russia, China, and Pakistan abstained. Since deploying in June 2024, the force has been limited to fewer than 1,000 troops, far below its planned 2,500, due to funding gaps. Haiti has seen escalating violence since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, with gangs controlling approximately 90% of the capital, Port-au-Prince. With this move, the international community seeks to turn the tide against these armed groups and restore peace and security to the people of Haiti.
