Walmart is set to open its first branded stores in South Africa by year’s end, marking a major step in the US retail giant’s African expansion. The company, which already owns local retail group Massmart, will now compete directly with local heavyweights Shoprite, Woolworths, and Pick ‘n Pay, as well as online rivals Amazon and Takealot.com. Walmart says the move highlights its commitment to affordability and accessibility, with plans to stock fresh groceries, household goods, apparel, and tech products. Crucially, the stores will feature locally sourced items from small and medium-sized African suppliers, blending global standards with South Africa’s cultural identity. Currently, store locations are under development, with official launch dates expected in October.
