In the bustling Mukuru slum of Nairobi, a powerful transformation is underway, fueled by creativity and resilience. The Wajukuu Arts collective, founded in 2003 as a sanctuary for teens escaping gang life, now champions hope for a new generation. This grassroots initiative provides a vital space where art becomes both a personal therapy and a compelling form of social commentary. The artists ingeniously transform discarded materials, even weapons, into profound sculptures and paintings that comment on inequality and human suffering. Beyond art, the collective mentors 30 young people in creative skills and reaches 150 children yearly through its Kids’ Club, showing how paintbrushes can rebuild lives where violence once ruled.
