West Africa Unites: Nigeria and Benin Launch Ambitious Economic Partnership

4

Nigeria and Benin have taken a major step toward regional integration by implementing a new economic cooperation agreement designed to boost bilateral trade. The deal, born out of the June 2025 West Africa Economic Summit in Abuja, aims to streamline customs procedures, improve transport links, facilitate trade, and strengthen private sector collaboration—key goals aligned with ECOWAS and the AfCFTA. Nigerian officials praised the deal as a shift from informal exchanges to structured partnerships, though challenges like smuggling remain. With technical teams finalizing implementation plans, both nations aim to transform West Africa’s economic potential into reality. During the June summit, Nigeria’s President Tinubu urged the region’s leaders to move past fragmentation and embrace regional transformation through coordinated policies and local value addition. This agreement could be the catalyst for that change.
