Zambia Lures Carmakers to Build EV Parts Near Copper Mines

2

Zambia is actively courting electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers to set up component plants near its copper mines, aiming to boost value addition and integrate into the global EV supply chain. The country’s finance minister, Situmbeko Musokotwane, has pitched this strategy to automakers, including during a recent visit to Germany. He has urged them to integrate Zambian production with South African assembly lines, proposing that they manufacture the components in Zambia and then ship them to factories in South Africa. The country is already attracting investors: Chinese electric automaker BYD expanded into the country last year via a partnership with Pilatus Electric Mobility Zambia Limited. Copper is a vital metal for the production of EV engines, and Zambia is the second-largest producer of the metal in Africa.
