Somalia sees surge in tourism despite insecurity

4

Somalia, long synonymous with conflict and piracy, is quietly emerging as a niche destination for adventurous travelers. In 2024, around 10,000 tourists visited—a 50% increase from the previous year—drawn by curiosity, extreme travel challenges, and unique experiences. While Mogadishu remains dangerous, tourists’ experiences are heavily managed, involving stays within secure Green Zones and movement only in armed convoys. The recent launch of a streamlined e-visa system signals the government’s ambition to boost arrivals and simplify entry. However, the initiative has faced challenges, as autonomous regions like Somaliland and Puntland reject the new visa and maintain separate regulations. While some visitors highlight Somalia’s surprising hospitality, vibrant markets, and pristine beaches, experts stress that the country remains dangerous. Despite the risks, this cautious optimism signals a potential rebirth of Somalia’s tourism sector.
