Ethiopia and Eritrea’s rift deepens

Abiy Ahmed Ethiopia

Tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea have flared again after Ethiopian police accused Asmara of secretly supplying ammunition to rebels in the Amhara region. Authorities say they seized 56,000 rounds of ammunition and arrested suspects allegedly linked to Eritrea’s ruling party, a claim Eritrea has firmly denied. Eritrean officials counter that Ethiopia’s Prosperity Party is fabricating accusations to justify a long-anticipated conflict. The exchange revives deep mistrust between the neighbors, whose 2018 landmark peace agreement now seems a distant memory. The friction stems from Ethiopia’s recent assertions about needing sea access, which Eritrea perceives as a direct threat. While leaders on both sides insist they prefer dialogue, the mutual accusations and historical distrust risk sparking a dangerous new conflict in the volatile Horn of Africa.
