South Africa recently summoned newly appointed US Ambassador Leo Brent Bozell III after he publicly dismissed the nation’s judiciary. At an event, Bozell commented that he didn’t care about the stance of South Africa’s judiciary on a historical liberation chant. He then went on to label it as “hate speech.” However, the controversy seems to have been smoothed over, with a South African official revealing Bozell apologized for the incident. With this occurrence, South African officials bolstered their domestic political standing, defending their legal sovereignty against foreign interference. Meanwhile, Washington, which has been at odds with Pretoria since President Donald Trump’s return to the White House, has further diminished its diplomatic goodwill in the country.
