South Africa appoints low-profile envoy to Washington

African leaders engaged in a serious conversation during a diplomatic meeting.

South Africa is treading carefully in Washington, appointing career diplomat Thabo Thage as acting head of mission rather than risking another ambassador rejection. The cautious move follows a turbulent stretch: previous ambassador Ebrahim Rasool was expelled after calling Trump a white supremacist, and a subsequent nominee was flatly rejected by Washington. Despite his acting status, Thage can negotiate and sign agreements, giving Pretoria functional diplomatic capacity without a high-stakes confirmation battle. While this means South Africa will retain diplomatic continuity, the lack of a fully empowered ambassador representing its interests will no doubt lead to some loss of influence. Nevertheless, this deliberately low-profile approach will potentially help Pretoria weather Trump’s term without permanent rupture—preserving a relationship that will outlast any single administration.
