Sierra Leone Study Shows Simple Screening Tool Could Save Mothers From Sepsis and Birth Complications

A new study highlights how a simple, low-cost screening approach could significantly improve the early detection of life-threatening complications such as severe bleeding and sepsis during childbirth in Sierra Leone. Researchers found that a straightforward vital-sign-based tool—focused on early warning indicators like shock index—can reliably identify women at high risk of deterioration, allowing clinicians to intervene sooner in settings where advanced diagnostics are limited. The findings are especially important for low-resource health systems, where maternal sepsis and postpartum haemorrhage remain leading causes of preventable death. Experts say the approach could help reduce delays in treatment, improve triage in overcrowded facilities, and strengthen maternal survival rates if integrated into routine care protocols.
