An Institute for Security Studies report warns that secretive migrant deportation agreements between the United States and several African countries are weakening transparency, democratic oversight and human rights protections. The deals involve African states accepting third-country migrants deported from the US, often under pressure linked to aid, visas, trade or security incentives. Critics argue governments are bypassing public scrutiny and parliamentary oversight while exposing deportees to unsafe conditions and legal uncertainty. Countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and Cameroon have already received deportees. The report urges the African Union to demand full disclosure of agreements and stronger safeguards to protect migrants and democratic accountability.
