China has handed over a $56.5 million headquarters to ECOWAS in Abuja, marking a significant boost to China’s presence in West Africa. The project, completed in under two years, was funded entirely by Beijing. It will serve as the regional bloc’s main administrative hub, aimed at improving coordination among its 15 member states. Chinese officials framed the project as part of a broader partnership built on non-interference and mutual development. Meanwhile, ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray praised the speed behind its delivery, which involved round-the-clock collaboration between Chinese and regional engineers. The facility is expected to be formally inaugurated later this year by regional leaders, including Nigeria’s Bola Tinubu and Sierra Leone’s Julius Maada Bio.
