Fighting flares again in Ethiopia’s Tigray

Tigray Ethiopian forces

New clashes have erupted in northern Ethiopia between federal troops and Tigrayan forces, threatening to re-ignite a devastating conflict in a region already pushed to the brink. The fighting in western Tigray has disrupted flights and raised fears of a wider security breakdown. This violence returns to a landscape still shattered by the 2020-2022 war, which caused mass displacement and thousands of deaths. Compounding the crisis, massive cuts to international aid—particularly from USAID following recent US policy shifts—have left humanitarian efforts crippled. With up to 80% of Tigray’s population needing emergency assistance, doctors and aid agencies warn that shrinking funds are eroding access to health care, water, and basic services, pushing an already fragile region closer to crisis.
