Africa Grappling with Extreme Heat Amid Global Temperature Records

Africa is grappling with unprecedented heat waves as the summer of 2024 sets a global record for the hottest season in history. Temperatures, driven by human-induced climate change, have climbed above 40°C (104°F) across the continent, exacerbating droughts, crop failures, and heat-related deaths. While El Niño has contributed to previous temperature spikes, scientists now point to long-term climate change driven by fossil fuel emissions as the primary cause of these extreme conditions. Copernicus, a European climate service, reported that the northern hemisphere averaged 16.8°C (62.24°F) this summer, surpassing 2023’s record. Vulnerable populations in African countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Senegal are particularly affected, with worsening food security and health risks resulting from the soaring temperatures. While a forecasted La Niña may temporarily cool some regions, 2024 is still on track to break the annual temperature record, underscoring the urgent need for global climate action.
