African Startups Are Undervalued—A New Report Says Poor Storytelling Is to Blame

Close-up of a starting line on a running track with "START" written on it.

A new report by Talking Drum Communications reveals that African startups are globally undervalued—not for lack of innovation, but for lack of compelling storytelling. Despite the continent’s growing tech ecosystem, many startups fail to convey their value beyond founder-led or product-centric narratives. This communication gap limits funding, credibility, and growth, especially in complex sectors like B2B and health logistics. The report urges startups to shift toward purpose-driven narratives that highlight impact and mission, citing success stories like Zipline and Duplo. It proposes two frameworks, Narrative Maturity Ladder and ROI Model, to help companies measure and evolve their storytelling strategy. Strong, strategic narratives, it argues, are no longer optional—they’re essential to global recognition and long-term success.
