African airlines posted the strongest cargo demand growth worldwide in August 2025, with volumes surging 11% year-on-year, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Capacity also expanded by 12.3%, highlighting the sector’s resilience and growing importance in global trade. This performance far outpaced the global average of 4.1% growth, marking the sixth consecutive month of rising demand. IATA attributed the surge to a shift from sea freight to air freight, particularly for high-value goods, as companies seek to reduce tariff risks. Key trade lanes connecting Africa to Asia were particularly strong performers. This growth in African air cargo demand is further supported by declining jet fuel costs and an uptick in global trade, signaling a vibrant period for the logistics sector.
