JNIM’s growing reach threatens West Africa’s stability

9

Al-Qaeda’s Sahel affiliate, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), has drawn global attention after claiming its first attack in Nigeria, marking a dangerous escalation in West Africa’s insurgency. Formed in 2017 from Mali-based jihadist groups, the organization expertly blends brutal attacks with basic governance, entrenching itself in areas where government presence is weak. Led by Iyad Ag Ghali and Amadou Koufa, the group uses ambushes, road tolls, and even fuel blockades to destabilize Mali, where its actions have crippled supply lines to Bamako. By simultaneously projecting power and undermining state authority, this group presents a complex and escalating challenge to the entire West African region. Its move into Nigeria highlights growing cross-border insecurity—and the mounting challenge of containing a network that thrives on weak governance and porous borders.
