Why does African cinema still use Hollywood’s scoring playbook?

No African music scoring system

Afrobeats has conquered global charts, but its influence has yet to fully transform African film scoring—a gap that exposes deeper structural challenges in the continent’s creative industries. While early African cinema embraced rich musical traditions, today’s films often rely on generic Western-style production scores rather than African contemporary sounds. According to industry insiders, this disconnect can be attributed to limited funding and weak infrastructure. Underfunded post-production budgets, label bureaucracy blocking artist collaborations, and rising Afrobeats licensing costs are all squeezing African film composers into creative corners. The continent’s rich musical traditions—talking drums, Uhadi strings, Malinké textures—remain vastly underexplored on screen. Consequently, some creatives see opportunity in blending these indigenous instruments with modern scoring, pointing to a future where African films finally sound as global—and distinct—as their music.
