FarmBot and Baby-Tech: African Innovators Battle for Top Engineering Prize

A self-driving “FarmBot” built by 30-year-old Togolese engineer Sam Kodo is among 16 inventions shortlisted for the Royal Academy of Engineering’s 2025 Africa Prize. The robot uses AI and humidity sensors to detect crop diseases early, monitor soil moisture, and help farmers boost yields—one of several innovations tackling key African challenges. Also on the list: a baby bracelet that tracks vital signs and beehive sensors that can help prevent colony collapse. The award, which offers over $80,000 in prize money to the winners, recognizes and supports commercially viable, high-impact engineering solutions. Beyond that, it provides visibility to the inventions. Over the years, the prize has served as a gateway to greater investment, with its alumni raising over $39 million in funding.
