Ghana has switched on a new national 5G infrastructure platform, marking a major step in the country’s push to expand high-speed connectivity and accelerate its digital economy. The wholesale network, operated by Next Gen Infraco, has gone live in parts of major cities including Accra, Kumasi, and Tamale, with nationwide expansion planned in phases. Under the model, telecom operators connect to a shared backbone rather than building separate networks, allowing faster rollout and potentially lower infrastructure costs. The government hopes the initiative will help extend 5G coverage to about 70% of the population within the next year, dramatically improving mobile speeds and digital services. Officials say the technology could unlock new opportunities in sectors such as business, education, and healthcare, positioning Ghana as one of Africa’s early movers in next-generation mobile connectivity.
