Khartoum’s Ruins: A Reporter Reflects on Loss and Hope Amid Sudan’s War

10

In a poignant report, a Sky reporter returns to their childhood home in war-torn Khartoum, Sudan, where destruction and looting have left the city in ruins. Following the 2023 power struggle between Sudan’s Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the capital was left in devastation, with at least 61,000 people killed and millions displaced. The army has now reclaimed the city after two years of occupation. The journalist, who returned home following the army’s victory, reports that once-vibrant streets are now lined with bullet-ridden buildings and charred homes. While their family home remains standing, it’s been ransacked, with furniture, appliances, and personal items stolen. Yet, among the destruction, the reporter finds small reminders of hope—a family photo album, a rocking chair, and a painting, symbolizing the resilience of the Sudanese spirit amidst overwhelming loss.
