Nigeria’s Homegrown Sport Eyes International Stage

Abula, a uniquely Nigerian sport invented in Lagos in 1984, is attracting renewed attention as supporters push for international recognition. Created by physical education teacher Elias Yusuf, the game combines elements of volleyball, such as the four-a-side configuration, with the use of a rectangular bat to strike a tennis ball over a net. Abula, which is named after a popular Yoruba dish, emphasizes teamwork, quick decision-making, and agility. The sport has been featured at Nigeria’s National Sports Festival since 1998 and enjoys a following in schools, military camps, and community competitions. Despite limited funding, infrastructure, and media exposure, advocates believe its accessibility and cultural identity could help it expand across Africa and beyond. Officials hope increased support will eventually lead to appearances at the African Games, Commonwealth Games, and even the Olympics, transforming a local innovation into a global sport.
