Renewable energy projects are rapidly overtaking traditional power developments across Africa as governments and investors prioritize faster, cheaper, and more flexible electricity generation. Industry data show solar projects accounted for more than half of the 322 energy developments announced across Africa in 2025, totaling 173 projects. Analysts say falling technology costs and growing energy demand are driving the transition, with utility-scale solar prices dropping nearly 90% globally since 2010. Countries including South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia led renewable capacity growth last year, while distributed solar and battery systems are increasingly powering mines, factories, telecom towers, and homes independently of national grids. Investors are also attracted by quicker construction timelines and reduced exposure to fuel price shocks. Despite this momentum, major challenges remain, including weak utility finances, high borrowing costs, and limited access to affordable project financing across many African markets.
