Rwanda in Talks to Receive US Deportees Amid Immigration Crackdown

Rwanda's official discusses innovation initiatives at a conference with US representatives.

Rwanda has confirmed early-stage talks with the United States to accept deported migrants, marking its second such negotiation after a similar deal with the UK fell through. Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe disclosed that discussions are ongoing but noted no final agreement has been reached. The proposed plan reportedly involves the US paying Rwanda to resettle the deportees, who have criminal records but will have served their sentences in the US. Once resettled, Rwanda will attempt to reintegrate them into society by providing them with stipends and job assistance. The move aligns with President Trump’s intensified immigration crackdown, including controversial deportations and plans for mass detentions. Meanwhile, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has warned that such deals risk violating asylum protections. However, Rwanda has dismissed these concerns as unfounded.
