Senegal doubles prison terms for homosexuality

Senegal has tightened its stance on LGBTQ+ rights after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye signed a law doubling prison sentences for same-sex relations to up to 10 years, with fines reaching approximately $17,609. The move, backed overwhelmingly by parliament, reflects strong domestic political support and delivers on campaign promises, strengthening the government’s standing among conservative and religious constituencies. However, it deepens risks for LGBTQ+ individuals and advocacy groups, who now face harsher penalties and increased surveillance. The law also shifts leverage toward the state, expanding its authority to police both conduct and expression. In the longer term, it may strain Senegal’s global reputation and complicate relations with international partners, even as it consolidates support at home.
