Solar Minigrids Could Create Thousands of Jobs in Nigeria

A new report says deploying more than 10,000 solar minigrids across Nigeria could create nearly 213,000 jobs while helping close the country’s chronic electricity-access gap. The study, conducted by the Africa Policy Research Institute, highlights Nigeria’s growing role as the leading private minigrid market in sub-Saharan Africa. The findings align with Mission 300, a joint African Development Bank and World Bank initiative aimed at cutting Africa’s energy access gap in half through off-grid solar expansion and other solutions. Currently, approximately 600 million people on the continent lack reliable electricity. The report adds momentum to a sector already attracting private investment. Earlier this month, Renewvia Energy Corp., a US-based solar minigrid operator currently active in Kenya and Nigeria, announced plans to expand operations into the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Uganda.
