A Kenyan court has temporarily blocked the government’s plan to grant Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. a 30-year contract to operate Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), pending a final ruling. The Law Society of Kenya and the Kenya Human Rights Commission filed the case, arguing that leasing the strategic airport to a private entity contradicts constitutional principles of good governance, transparency, and responsible use of public funds. They also expressed concerns over the affordability of the $1.85 billion deal, stating that it could lead to job losses and public fiscal risk. Under the terms of the agreement, the Gautam Adani-led company would be responsible for upgrading JKIA, including building a new runway and passenger terminal. However, both organizations believe Kenya can raise the funds for these projects independently. The Kenyan government defends the deal, citing the airport’s capacity constraints and need for upgrades.
