John Legend Stands by Kigali Concert Amid Controversy

John Legend has defended his decision to headline a sold-out concert in Kigali, Rwanda, despite the country’s involvement in the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The US star emphasized that his performance wasn’t about endorsing the Rwandan government but celebrating music and expanding opportunities for touring on the continent. He argued that punishing an entire nation for its leaders’ actions is unfair, even as reports link Rwanda to rebel support in the DR Congo conflict. While fellow artists like Tems opted out of performing, Legend maintained that the mission of the Move Afrika event, organized by the Global Citizen NGO, was important.
