In Uganda, EarthEnable is transforming homes and lives with an affordable, clay-based alternative to dirt floors. Priced at about $65—roughly 70% cheaper than concrete—these eco-friendly floors reduce dust that can irritate breathing, infestations of jigger fleas, and diseases linked to dust floors, thereby enhancing health and hygiene for rural families. Locally sourced and sealed with a plant-based varnish, the floors are not only durable but also significantly lower in carbon emissions than concrete. EarthEnable trains and employs local youth as masons, creating jobs while addressing Uganda’s 2.6 million-unit housing deficit. With thousands of installations across East Africa, this grassroots solution is helping families across Uganda breathe easier—literally and figuratively—while offering a cleaner, healthier way of life.
