Angola’s President Teases Succession Plans Ahead of 2027 Exit

Angolan President João Lourenço has signaled his intent to step down after his second term ends in 2027, hinting he’s already considering a capable successor. In a CNN Portugal interview, Lourenço said it’s his duty to ensure Angola isn’t left “in the hands of just anyone.” His comments come amid speculation—and concern—that he might seek a third term despite constitutional two-term limits. In response to the uncertainty, opposition and civil society groups have sought to pressure Lourenço to relinquish power once his mandate ends. Meanwhile, the president had previously dismissed early leadership bids within his party, emphasizing that no candidate currently enjoys the backing of the ruling Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola.
