In response to the uncertainty, opposition and civil society groups have sought to pressure Lourenço to relinquish power once his mandate ends. Meanwhile, the president had previously dismissed early leadership bids within his party, emphasizing that no candidate currently enjoys the backing of the ruling Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola.
