South Africa remains key player in world trade

Despite widespread fears of deglobalization, the world’s trade connections remain near record highs—and South Africa is firmly part of that story. The DHL Global Connectedness Report 2026 ranks South Africa 53rd among 180 economies, reflecting its status as one of Africa’s most internationally integrated nations. Global connectedness reached 25% in 2025, matching the 2022 peak, while goods trade is projected to grow at 2.6% annually in coming years. Africa itself is gaining momentum, with international tourist arrivals up 17% compared to pre-pandemic levels, the second-strongest recovery globally. Analysts note that geopolitical tensions are making headlines, but actual trade flows remain remarkably resilient—and countries willing to invest in logistics and reduce trade barriers stand to gain even more.
