South Africa’s government is facing a legal challenge from the Democratic Alliance over a controversial land expropriation law that triggered President Trump’s executive order to halt US aid. The law permits the government to expropriate private property without compensation if negotiations fail. However, the DA has condemned it as unconstitutional and an abuse of power. Consequently, the party seeks to nullify the law in its entirety. Critics, including Trump, argue the law unfairly targets white farmers, despite government claims that it only addresses unused land. Trump’s order to suspend aid to the country goes beyond its supposed treatment of white South Africans. In his directive, the US president also accused Pretoria of adopting an anti-American foreign policy, citing its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice and its ties with Russia, Iran, and China.
