Economic freedom might not grab headlines, but it quietly shapes everything from job opportunities to education quality. However, the picture remains grim in 2025. According to the latest Index of Economic Freedom, published by The Heritage Foundation, most of the world, including many African nations, remains “mostly unfree.” Nevertheless, there are bright spots, particularly in Africa. Mauritius tops the continent with an impressive score of 75.0, ranking 15th globally. This is thanks to sound governance and a friendly regulatory climate. Botswana and Cabo Verde follow closely at second and third, respectively. Their rankings highlight how reforms can fuel prosperity. Seychelles, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Morocco rank fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively, while Tanzania, Namibia, Benin, and Côte d’Ivoire round out the top 10.
